Rishi Sunak dramatically cancelled the rest of the HS2 project and declared to pump the £36 billion savings into better transport projects.
The Prime Minister confirmed the move saying the high-speed scheme was the symbol of the ‘old consensus’, as he pledged to ‘fundamentally change our country’ and fix ‘broken’ politics like Margaret Thatcher did.
He said bosses of the project would be replaced to ‘take responsibility’ for the way it had been botched, with costs soaring.

Rishi Sunak said there was nothing ambitious about pouring more and more money into the wrong project’.
Mr Sunak put the community at the heart of his appeal to voters, saying the Conservatives were the party of the ‘pharmacist’s son and grocer’s daughter’ drawing a parallel between his own background and that of the 1980s Conservative heroine.
The premier is rallying the party faithful as he wraps up what is likely to be the last Conservative gathering before the country chooses a new government, and was introduced by his wife Akshata in touching scenes.

Quipping that the Prime Minister had no idea what she was intending to say, Mrs Murty said her husband of 14 years was her ‘best friend’ and he was summed up by the word ‘aspiration’.
She insisted it was the ‘greatest honour’ for him to be in charge of the country, and gave an emotional endorsement of his character.
She said that he was fun, he was thoughtful, he was compassionate and that he had an incredible zest for life.

Following her on to the stage, a clearly touched Rishi Sunak said that he thanked her for always being there for him and that it was literally the best long-term decision for a brighter future he ever made.
However, turning to politics Rishi Sunak swiped at his critics, saying there would ‘always be people who disagree’, as he is poised to axe HS2’s Manchester leg, instead pumping billions into other northern transport projects, and defer tax cuts.
And he launched a vicious salvo at Sir Keir Starmer saying he was always ‘banging on about Europe’ and only says whatever he thinks will benefit him.
The importance of making an impact was highlighted with another poll revealing the Tory bounce after he watered down Net Zero commitments have reversed.
Rishi Sunak was introduced by a video demonstrating how he was ‘changing the status quo’, including footage of him announcing the COVID furlough scheme as Chancellor and agreeing the Windsor Framework with the EU.
Oh please, pass me the sick bucket. The entire thing was nauseating and Rishi Sunak’s wife sounded like she was receiving an Oscar on behalf of her husband.
Rishi Sunak is not fit for purpose and he certainly has no leadership ability. I’m sure there are many who also share the view that he’s just serving himself and his cronies rather than the country, and this is a stain on many fine MPs who actually have the interest of the country and the common man at the forefront of their beliefs and actions.
And it seemingly appears that the money that is being saved is going to be used as an election bribe. Extremely predictable but the sheep will still vote Tory anyhow.
All we hear about are vows, promises, and announcements, but nothing fortuitous will come from it. Why did they wait until now to announce all this change? Rishi Sunak and his cabinet have been running the show for a year, what were they doing all that time?
