The restaurant maintained that the termination of the Michigan server was a “business decision” unconnected to the substantial $10,000 tip that she received on a $32.43 transaction.
Although she gave the money to eight other coworkers, Linsey Boyd, a mother from Michigan who got the astounding tip, was fired from the Mason Jar Cafe in Benton Harbour.
In a since-deleted Facebook post, Boyd claimed that the controversy resulted from an unknown client leaving a $10,000 tip to remember a buddy who had recently passed away.
The middle-aged man in a dark suit wished not to be identified but said he was in town for the funeral and intended to spread some cheer through the generous gratuity, according to the Detroit Free Press.
‘I just gave him a hug. I didn’t even know his name at that point, but I hugged him. He then told me he left her a memorial of someone very dear to him, and he wanted to do something kind and generous in her name,’ Boyd told WSBT.
What started as a positive tale took a turn for the worse when Boyd disclosed in her widely shared article that she was fired due to “all of the drama, animosity, and hurt” that resulted from the large tip.
The restaurant owners, Able Martinez and Jayme Cousins, said that Boyd’s firing had nothing to do with the $10,000 tip, but they were constrained by “labour laws” in what they could disclose.
‘We cannot comment on the nature of her losing her job due to labour laws and to protect the staff involved,’ the couple wrote in a Facebook post.
‘However, I will say it had nothing to do with the tip. She did receive the entire tip, but she did not pay taxes on it (the business did). Yes, she shared the tip at the request of the man who left it,’ they continued.
However, Boyd provided her own account, claiming that she was requested to take a mental health day when “drama” erupted in the restaurant due to the tip.
‘Drama ensued, and in an attempt to diffuse the situation and resolve any rumours, things became even worse,’ she wrote.
She did not specify what happened and has since deleted the post and taken her entire Facebook page down. But rumours have circulated, suggesting the staff who was not working that day may have expected to share the tip.
She was fired because the avaricious workers who weren’t there that day demanded a piece of her wealth. Why would they receive anything at all when they weren’t even there?
Taking into account the size of an average restaurant staff and dividing it among them all, this tip wasn’t revolutionary. If the restaurant received that much in tips on a good week, it wouldn’t surprise me.
This is terrible since she was gracious enough to give her gratuity to the other employees. She could use the money now that she is jobless. I believe that every person she split her money with should give it back to her, and shame on the business, but no good deed goes unpunished.
Some people out there are just so greedy and envious that they can’t be happy for another person getting a leg up in life, and I hope that this nice waitress gets more luck coming her way in the future because she didn’t deserve to lose her job.
It seems that one man’s good deed has caused so many problems, What a sad, greedy world we live in.
