Downing Street issued a grovelling apology to British Hindus today after serving meat and alcohol at a Diwali celebration.
After a backlash, No 10 admitted a ‘mistake’ had been made in organising the event, pledging ‘it will not happen again’.
Although there is no explicit ban on drinking alcohol or eating meat in Hinduism, many Hindus opt not to, and others are vegetarians.
Those voicing concerns included Shivani Raja, the Conservative MP for Leicester East, who said it showed a ‘disappointing lack of knowledge’.
A No 10 spokeswoman said, ‘The Prime Minister was pleased to welcome a range of communities celebrating Diwali to a reception in Downing Street.
‘He paid tribute to the huge contribution the British Hindu, Sikh, and Jain communities make to our country and how the government is driven by the shared values of hard work, ambition, and aspiration.
‘A mistake was made in the organisation of the event. We understand the strength of feeling on this issue and so would apologise to the community and assure them it will not happen again.’
Diwali is the Hindu Festival of Light, symbolising the spiritual victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance.
Since 2009, Downing Street has commemorated the occasion with a reception.
It became well-known when Rishi Sunak, the first Hindu prime minister of Britain, was in office. He was seen lighting traditional candles with his family to commemorate the event.
In a letter to Sir Keir, Ms Raja said she was ‘greatly concerned’ to hear that attendees of this year’s celebration were offered meat and alcohol.
‘I feel this speaks poorly against the organisation of this year’s event—with a disappointing lack of knowledge of the customs and traditions that many British citizens hold dear,’ she said.
‘As a practicing Hindu, representing thousands of Hindus within my own constituency of Leicester East, I have been deeply saddened to hear that this year’s festivities were overshadowed in the greatest Office of State by negativity as a result of this oversight.’
This is a perfect example of Keir Starmer’s lack of attention to detail. That’s one thing even Rishi Sunak would have got right. If Starmer can’t get an event like that right, I wouldn’t hold out much for fixing the foundations of our country.
This Labour government is so out of depth and they don’t have a clue how to run the UK, and in the end, they will cause so much harm and it will drive this country into ruin. If they don’t change their ill-thought-out budget and expand the minimum wage among other things, they will have no choice but to step down and call another election.
And why is the UK even commemorating such an occasion? Our British values are not at all like this!
It seems that Starmer is only interested in keeping one, particular demographic happy, and it’s not the Indigenous, hard-working taxpayers.
Let’s face it, English isn’t the first language of many in the service in the catering industry now. They probably misread the instructions, and where it said ‘Hindu’, they probably thought it said ‘Hen do.’
We don’t even have to say much about our new Labour government, we now just know they’re all useless!
