Russia’s ambassador to the UK has declared that Ukraine’s use of Storm Shadow missiles on Russian territory means Britain ‘is now directly involved in this war’.
‘This firing cannot happen without NATO staff, British staff as well,’ Andrei Kelin told Sky News – a day after British-made rockets battered a military base in Russia’s Kursk region.
His remarks were made after Russian forces seemed to launch a suspected intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) attack on the city of Dnipro, prompting European and British officials to denounce a “clear and deeply concerning escalation” in the crisis in Ukraine by Vladimir Putin.
Sir Keir Starmer’s office said: ‘If (the suspected ICBM strike) is true, clearly this would be another example of grave, reckless and escalatory behaviour from Russia and only serves to strengthen our resolve.’
France’s foreign ministry echoed that sentiment, declaring that an ICBM launch ‘would be an extremely serious event’ as EU foreign affairs spokesman Peter Stano told reporters such an attack would be ‘yet another clear escalation from Putin’.
Following the release of a shocking video showing what Kyiv officials believe to be warheads from a Russian ICBM or sophisticated rocket pouring down over Ukraine around 5:17 a.m. local time today, European politicians issued their harsh remarks.
‘Today, our crazy neighbour once again showed what he really is – and how afraid he is,’ Volodymyr Zelensky said.
The Ukrainian President said the missile’s speed and altitude match the profile of an ICBM after Kyiv’s air force reported the explosions were caused by such a weapon, though evidence has not yet been provided.
If an ICBM strike is verified, it would be the first time such a weapon has ever been used in war, however, Russian officials have so far declined to comment.
However, other observers questioned whether Russian troops had employed a full-fledged ICBM, claiming the strike’s estimated range was insufficient for an intercontinental missile.
They noted that to prevent early warning systems and a potential reaction, Moscow would have needed to alert Washington.
Security cameras captured the moment several missiles streaked through the night sky and triggered a string of fierce explosions in the city of Dnipro where the plants of state-owned aerospace and defence manufacturer Yuzmash are located.
Zelensky said experts were investigating the strike to try and identify the exact weapon used.
‘Expert examinations are underway. It is obvious that Putin is using Ukraine as a testing ground,’ Zelensky said in a video posted on social media.
The salvos’ intensity, velocity, and coordination indicated that MIRVs (multiple independently targetable re-entry vehicles) were responsible for the explosions.
It’s not our conflict and clearly, no one other than politicians seems to want us to be involved in any way.
Neither of those nations is an angelic nation. Russia and Ukraine, which were formerly one nation, were well-known for their extreme corruption. It’s their fight and we should leave it to them to get on with.
Why does Starmer want to yank us into it? Did the people vote for a warmonger? And if he does want to start a war, I expect to see him on the frontline, not secure and comfortable in an underground bunker someplace.
This is about two Slavic countries with a shared border, basically having a disagreement over said border. Nothing whatsoever to do with anyone else, but the West just can’t help itself.
Keir Starmer has now turned this into our battle, which is a careless betrayal that jeopardises British security. He has now taken this to a completely new level instead of protecting the UK.
