After the Hamas terror strikes in Israel on October 7, there has been a more than threefold increase in anti-Muslim hate incidents in the UK, with British Muslim women being the target of most of these occurrences.
Islamophobia watchdog Tell MAMA recorded 2,010 cases of possible hate crimes against Muslims since Hamas killed 1,200 Israelis, mostly civilians, in Israel four months ago—335 percent of those compared to the same time a year ago.
Sixty-five percent of the 535 documented instances of abusive behaviour—which includes assaults, threats, and vandalism—were directed at British Muslim women.
According to Home Office figures obtained by the Mail, Muslims have been the target of hate crimes for the most number of years, accounting for 44% of all instances, for seven consecutive years.
Tory MPs demanded last night that the government take further action to combat hate speech directed towards Muslims.
Former minister Paul Bristow said: ‘There has been a sharp rise in Islamophobia across the country in recent months, and I know first-hand from speaking to my constituents in Peterborough how worried they are about these rises.
‘What has taken me back is just how blatant Islamophobia can be without being called out.
‘I have spoken to many British Muslims who want to see the bloodshed in Gaza end, but fear speaking up on issue could lead to anti-Muslim attacks. This should never be the case.’
The government and everyone in society should do more to prevent Islamophobia and assaults on people because of their beliefs, according to Mark Eastwood, a Tory MP and member of the APPG for British Muslims.
‘Muslims in my constituency in Bolton have contributed so much to the wider town and region; they should be praised for this contribution, not persecuted.’
Just over half of the cases recorded since October 7 included online hatred, such as threatening British Muslims in a future ‘civil war’ or being told to ‘f*** off to a Muslim country’.
One now-banned account on X, formerly Twitter, asked users who would win in an ‘upcoming civil war in Britain’, giving them the option of ‘British’ or ‘Muslim’ people.
The startling statistics were released less than a week after a Jewish security charity said that anti-Semitic incidents in the UK hit a record high in 2023, illustrating the rift brought about by the Middle East crisis.
In 2023, the number of anti-Jewish hate incidents reported by the Community Security Trust increased to 4,103 from 1,662 the previous year.
I’m hoping that this will all end quickly. Drama and frenzy are popular. Still, another bandwagon will most likely appear shortly.
What they shouldn’t be doing is putting those ridiculous flags in places. If they don’t want to integrate into our society, then they should just leave. Nobody is forcing them to stay.
The more serious problem is the overt anti-British sentiment that permeates our nation on a daily basis.
Why is this going on in our country? It has nothing to do with us, and demonstrators should be fined because no other country would allow it.
This is what happens when people move to our country; they try to force their beliefs on others already living here, yet our authorities side with them.
Our government has created an alien nation, so expect alienation.
If their values don’t fit our values, they are, of course, free to leave at any time they want.
I really don’t recognise the country that I grew up in. Not that I like it any less, but I wouldn’t want to be a young person now, and given the way it is, I certainly wouldn’t bring children into it.
