Chelmsford Prisoner Dies After Choking On Food

A resident at HMP Chelmsford died in hospital after having a choking episode. Peter Dickson, 66, was at the Category B prison when he was rushed to Broomfield Hospital last month.

Mr Dickson, whose reason for being a resident at the prison is not known, was said to have had a choking episode at the prison, on Springfield Road, Chelmsford, on March 13 this year. He was rushed to hospital but his condition deteriorated, Essex Coroner’s Court heard.

The prisoner’s demise was confirmed at the hospital. A provisional cause of death was recorded as hypoxic brain injury and choking on food.

Coroner Michelle Brown said: “Peter Dickson, from Basildon, died at Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford. This 66-year-old man was at HMP Chelmsford.

“He was found to have had a choking episode. He was admitted to hospital and continued to deteriorate and died at 8.15 am on March 13.

“A provisional cause of death was hypoxic brain injury and choking on food. This will not be a documentary.”

HMP Chelmsford has a population largely made up by people on remand, meaning they either await their trial or sentencing. Coroner Michelle Brown said: “He was a resident of HMP Chelmsford so by nature of that it will go to the complex team for them to deal with.”

A Ministry of Justice spokesperson said: “Peter Dickson died at HMP Chelmsford on March 13th 2025. As with all deaths in custody, the Prison and Probation Ombudsman will investigate.”

But Facebook was filled with hateful remarks, and it’s startling how many people see those who are incarcerated. To go back to jail and have a place to sleep and eat, some homeless persons commit small-time offences.

There are not enough staff members to care for inmates in overcrowded prisons. Some of these locations have filthy conditions due to mould growth and moisture from sewage leaks.

Perhaps if our government stopped housing all these immigrants our people wouldn’t be in these situations.

There have also been people who have been accommodated there because of a mental breakdown and required urgent assistance because they were a threat to themselves, and the powers that be don’t have anywhere else to put them. People need to think before they articulate because some proper scummy human beings are commenting like little keyboard warriors following the stench of social media.

My vision on life is pretty broad, therefore I like to address specific subjects that intrigue me. Therefore I really appreciate the world of politics, though I have no actual views on who I will vote for, that I will not tell you, so please do not ask! I am like an observation station when it comes to writing, and I simply take the news and make it my own. I have no expectations, I simply love to write, and I know this seems really odd, but I don't get paid for it, I really like what I do and since I am never under any pressure, I constantly find that I write much better, rather than being blanketed under masses of paperwork and articles that I am on a deadline to complete. The chances are, that whilst all other journalists are out there, ripping their hair out, attempting to get their articles completed, I'm simply rambling along at my convenience creating my perfect piece. I guess it must look pretty unpleasant to some of you that I work for nothing, perhaps even brutal. Perhaps I have an obvious disregard for authority, I have no idea, but I would sooner be working for myself, than under somebody else, excuse the pun! Small I maybe, but substantial I will become, eventually. My desk is the most chaotic mess, though surprisingly I know where everything is, and I think that I would be quite unsuited for a desk job. My views on matters vary and I am extremely open-minded to the stuff that I write about, but what I write about is the truth and getting it out there, because the people must be acquainted. Though I am quite entertained by what goes on in the world. My spotlight is mostly to do with politics, though I do write other material as well, but it's essentially politics that I am involved in, and I tend to concentrate my attention on that, however, information is essential. If you have information the possibilities are endless because you are only limited by your own imagination...
