Marjory Warren: Old Age Is Treatable

Dr Marjory Warren, born in 1897 and trained at the Royal Free Hospital, revolutionised British healthcare by transforming the treatment of neglected, bedridden elderly inmates into the formally recognised speciality of geriatric medicine.

She systematically audited and sorted hundreds of neglected patients at West Middlesex County Hospital, proving they were eminently treatable and successfully rehabilitating many—particularly stroke victims—so they could finally return home.

Despite facing professional resistance as a woman in a field her colleagues devalued, her seminal 1943 and 1946 papers in the British Medical Journal shifted medical consensus and led the NHS to formally recognise geriatric medicine as a speciality in the 1950s.

Tragically dying on 5 September 1960 following a car crash in France while travelling to a conference, the “mother of modern geriatric medicine” continues to be honoured today through namesake medical units at Charing Cross Hospital and Stepping Hill Hospital.

While residential care is necessary for some, the modern system has undone much of Dr Marjory Warren’s legacy by treating care homes as a permanent default rather than a temporary rehabilitative tool, causing older people to deteriorate faster due to societal convenience and an underfunded social care infrastructure.

Margaret Thatcher’s National Health Service and Community Care Act 1990 closed dedicated NHS geriatric hospitals and shifted elderly care into the community, which inadvertently sparked a massive boom in the private care home sector and transferred heavy financial burdens onto local authorities, who are now facing widespread bankruptcy trying to fund social care.

The closure of dedicated elderly care wards stripped the healthcare system of specialised acute geriatric expertise and rehabilitative focus, replacing Dr Warren’s vision of active recovery with a fragmented, commercialised system.

The critical loss of specialised geriatricians in both community and general hospital settings has resulted in widespread medication mismanagement and inappropriate dosing, which tragically triggers drug-induced delirium that frequently acts as the catalyst for rapid cognitive decline and premature dementia.

It is a profound tragedy that Dr Marjory Warren—the pioneering mother of modern geriatric medicine who single-handedly rescued thousands of elderly patients from neglect and revolutionised British healthcare—remains largely forgotten by the public she worked so tirelessly to serve.

As modern NHS elder care tragically regresses to the neglected, unspecialised state of the pre-geriatric era, our ageing population desperately needs a new champion with the fierce determination of Dr Marjory Warren to rescue them from a broken system.

Because modern NHS elder care has gone backwards, reverting to the same unspecialised neglect and systemic failures that existed before her time, our ageing population is once again left to languish without the expert, dignified treatment they deserve.

My vision on life is pretty broad, therefore I like to address specific subjects that intrigue me. Therefore I really appreciate the world of politics, though I have no actual views on who I will vote for, that I will not tell you, so please do not ask! I am like an observation station when it comes to writing, and I simply take the news and make it my own. I have no expectations, I simply love to write, and I know this seems really odd, but I don't get paid for it, I really like what I do and since I am never under any pressure, I constantly find that I write much better, rather than being blanketed under masses of paperwork and articles that I am on a deadline to complete. The chances are, that whilst all other journalists are out there, ripping their hair out, attempting to get their articles completed, I'm simply rambling along at my convenience creating my perfect piece. I guess it must look pretty unpleasant to some of you that I work for nothing, perhaps even brutal. Perhaps I have an obvious disregard for authority, I have no idea, but I would sooner be working for myself, than under somebody else, excuse the pun! Small I maybe, but substantial I will become, eventually. My desk is the most chaotic mess, though surprisingly I know where everything is, and I think that I would be quite unsuited for a desk job. My views on matters vary and I am extremely open-minded to the stuff that I write about, but what I write about is the truth and getting it out there, because the people must be acquainted. Though I am quite entertained by what goes on in the world. My spotlight is mostly to do with politics, though I do write other material as well, but it's essentially politics that I am involved in, and I tend to concentrate my attention on that, however, information is essential. If you have information the possibilities are endless because you are only limited by your own imagination...
